Leave These 5 Things Off Your Resume

Leave These 5 Things Off Your ResumeLeave These 5 Things Off Your ResumeYour resume is one of a million. And job recruiters are only spending five to seven seconds looking at it.With odds like that, if your resume isnt up to par, your chances at getting noticed are pretty slim.Surprisingly, many job seekers still make mistakes on their resume, some straightforward and some less so. Leave these five things off your resume to help set you on the right career path.1. Poor GrammarRecruiters cite improper grammar as one of the biggest reasons they immediately end consideration for applicants. More than three-quarters of business executives say a single typo is all it takes for them to rule out a candidate.Remember that your resume is your first impression. If its laden with improper grammar, what impression does that give recruiters?Grammatical errors, misspellings and other mistakes raise a red flag regarding your communication skills and attention to detail.Proofread your resume yoursel f, and then have someone else do it. If youre really driven to land a new job, ask a professional to help write and edit your resume.2. ReferencesReferences available upon request is outdated and unnecessary. If an employer is interested in your references, they will ask for them. Youre limited on space with your resume, so every word on the page needs to have purpose. These words are a waste of space.Additionally, if a potential employer were to ask for your references, you should also give those individuals some notice that they may be contacted. Give them some background on the opportunity and how you think they can help you nail the job.3. Irrelevant Professional ExperienceYour resume should be a snapshot of why you are right for the specific position to which youre applying. If youre submitting your resume to the accounting assistant job ad, its best to leave off the time you spent as a dog walker in college. The experiences on your resume should be related to the position and/o r the industry any previous jobs that dont help your case should be removed.Read about how to tailor your resume to the job 4. Outdated AccomplishmentsOne of the top resume mistakes people make is filling their resumes with awards and prizes, including being named class clown for their senior year in high school. When reviewing these accomplishments, make sure they make sense and are professional and relevant.5. Detailed High School and College YearsHigh school and college courses are also outdated information that you should omit. Simply listing the name of the school and your degree are all you need. If you have a college degree, remove your high school information entirely.A list of courses is generally not necessary, and only include impressive information such as scholarships and educational recognitions (like graduating cum laude or earning a spot on the Deans List). If you are just graduating college or if youre applying for an internship while in school, this would be the onl y time that including some relevant coursework or a summary of your thesis project could be helpful and relevant.Use Your Limited Space WiselyA few seconds is not a lot of time to make a good impression. Use that time wisely and ensure youve checked for spelling and grammar errors and that you dont have unnecessary lines of text on your resume referring to references available upon request. Finally, make sure that you havent wasted space with irrelevant professional experience, outdated accomplishments or overly detailed high school and college information.Build your resume to get the job of your dreams

12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer

12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job OfferOne of the worst parts ofjob searchingis bedrngnis hearing back from employers, even after an bewerbungsinterview. Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm these days rather than the exception. So you might consider yourself lucky if you hear any feedback at all during the interview process. But even when a hiring manager does provide feedback - often in response toyour inquiry about where you stand- you may not get a straight answer. Its worth asking Why arent hiring managers direct about letting you know that the company does not intend to make an offer? One reason is that it can be uncomfortable to share bad news. This can lead hiring managers to avoid giving feedback entirely, or use cliched phrases that serve as a non-direct way of telling candidates that their chances do not look good. Another reason is that they dont want to say anything that could lead to a discrimination comp laint. Or, the company could simply be too busy to take the time to notify candidates. If youre lucky enough to get feedback, here are some of the things that you might hear from a hiring manager when they dont want to hire you but dont want to come right out and say it. 12 Ways to Know Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer Be aware that in some cases, these sentiments from hiring managers may be genuine - not just a polite brush-off. It is possible, for instance, that hiring managers are waiting on feedback from key stakeholders, or negotiating departmental funding. That is, there is a possibility that you will get a job offer even after getting one of these responses. Still, in general, getting an email, phone call, or voicemail with one these statements is a sign that you will not be getting a job offer. We need to consider a few other candidates before making a decision. You are probably out of contention for the job. Telling you that the company is going to interview other app licants means youre not a top candidate.Ill keep your resume on file. There are few things that get filed these days and yourresumeprobably isnt going to be one of them. This is a way for hiring managers to avoid saying directly that you will not be getting a job offer. The position has been put on hold.Funding for the position has been put on hold. Its absolutely possible that these statements are accurate and the employer is holding off on filling the position. The bottom line for you, though, it that they will likely re-start the hiring process from scratch when the hold is over. Were going to move forward with other candidates whose qualifications are an even stronger match. Although you are qualified for the position, weve decided to select another candidate. This is a nice way of telling you that youre not the right person for the job.We have decided to move in another direction.Another nice way of saying that you dont have the qualifications thehiring manageris seeking.Weve deci ded to keep the position open, but we are not moving forward at this point. Its not an outright no, but its doubtful you will hear anything more from the employer. We arent going to be filling the position right now.Theres a chance this is legitimate, and you might still have a chance at the job, but I wouldnt hold my breath waiting. In many cases, youll see the job advertised again. This job doesnt seem like the best fit for you.You may be able to salvage the opportunity if you can convince the employer you are a good fit for the job, but its a long shot. The job seems to be too junior for you. This job isnt big enough for you. When youre told that the job isnt the right level, thehiring manager thinks youre overqualifiedand wont stick around if youre hired. We have filled the position with an internal candidate. We have promoted someone from within.Maybe they have, and maybe they havent, but in either case, they arent hiring you.We feel like you wouldnt be stimulated enough here, and I would hate for you to be bored.Even if you didnt think the job would be boring, youre not going to have a chance to find out.It came down to two candidates, and her skills were slightly more in line with what were looking for.You didnt get the job, but at least you were close.

How hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone else

How hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone elseHow hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone elseI can start off by confessing something I am not a company executive. So I was as surprised as anyone that a chat with someone who hires executives for a living could teach me practical tips for getting hired. By the end, I turned to the nearest CEO saying were not so different you and I.Our CEO Dimitar just sort of shrugged and said yeah, I know. But thats beside the point. Some things about hiring are universal and Cydnee Dubrof, managing director of The Dubrof Group executive search and talent consulting firm, taught me that. Heres how.You want to have a bespoke resumeOne thing that came up early in our conversation was that Dubrof had encountered an resume before. She didnt mince words about what happened I recently presented a candidate who had one of your resumes it was not well received by my client. She found it too distracting. I agreed and also didnt like it because it did n ot show her complete professional history. My clients hire me to show a complete picture. Now at this moment, it would have been easy to get defensive. But I wanted to focus mora on what the lesson was. After some back and forth, Dubrof said something illuminating. Sexy, fun resumes are appropriate if youre in an industry thats graphically intense. I just helped the daughter of a friend whos an artist and wants to be a dog walker so we put images of her art on her resume. But on a traditional executives resume graphics should take a back seat to data. Each resume should be curated or tailored to the person and the opportunity. You want to have a bespoke resume.Suddenly, what could have easily turned into an argument over whether color and design elements mean youre not serious turned into a discussion of what a resume should be. In fact, this matched perfectly with what my colleague Tatiana found in a recent experiment that different audiences reacted differently to resumes with mora personality. Specifically, she found that recruiters were far mora conservative than CEOs. but it has to be thoughtful color. In so many words, unlike the way hiring works for nearly everyone else, Ive learned that executive recruiters have far more than six seconds to review a resume. Theyre not just willing to parse through a half dozen or more detailed pages, its essential to ensure theyre hiring the right candidate. So using a 5+ page resume full of detail to apply for a mid-level salesperson job just doesnt make sense. Just in the same way, using a breezy one page summary resume for that CEO job is probably not going to get a good reaction. If real estate is about location, location, location then resumes are about audience, audience, audience. Still, there are other elements that Dubrof says every resume can and should have.As she put it trust me, if I get a resume that has a little more color Im happy to see it because they can get monotonous, but it has to be thoughtful color . Dubrof essentially argues that shorter isnt always better, more personal isnt always better, but more thoughtfully tailored to its audience is always a better approach for a resume regardless of the seniority of the position.LinkedIn is essential, but not enoughDubrof didnt mince words about one of the quickest way to get crossed off her list LinkedIn is huge for me. I augment it with other research, but if a candidate doesnt have a professional headshot and a coherent biography, s/he will get discounted quite frankly And I will tell you a picture is worth a thousand words. You might be an absolutely fabulous executive, but if you pose for a headshot in a wifebeater or full disco makeup, I question your judgement.Still, in spite of the importance that both AHA Foundation Executive Director George Zarubin and Dubrof ascribe to the platform, LinkedIn is not enough. LinkedIn is simple one of your tools. I coach mid-career executives that are seeking to make a change that in addition to a professional LinkedIn profile they must have a polished resume, engaging cover letter, crisp elevator pitch and compelling career narrative.Related articlesHow to identify and embed your company culture to grow your businessWe are hiring a Head of Marketing in DublinHow job sharing can change the future of workQuestions we all need to start askingIn the end, most of us dont apply for jobs the way CEOs do. But Dubrof makes it clear that we can and should think about the job application process the way they do. That means considering every aspect of how we present ourselves from the perspective of the person who might be hiring us. What are they looking for? How much time do they have to consider me? How can I make choosing me as easy as possible?Whatever job youre applying for, answering these questions is the first step towards success.

19 Easy Ways to Be Healthy in Your Office - The Muse

19 Easy Ways to Be Healthy in Your Office - The Muse19 Easy Ways to Be Healthy in Your OfficeIf youre like me and spend most of your day in an office, you probably think its impossible to practice healthy habits on the reg. (Unless your company has an in-office gym or catered meals every day- if thats you, youre a lucky duck.)Well, Ill prove you wrong. I came up with elend one, not 10, but 19 easy ways to have a stronger mind, body, and spirit in just your average workspace. By easy, I mean these are so quick and simple you wouldnt believe you can actually improve yourself by doing them. And yet, I have proof you canRead on to learn my healthy little secrets1. Keep Healthy Snacks NearbyAs Muse writer Nina Tamburello says, When the vending machine or leftovers from the 3 PM meeting tempt you with their ease and convenience, its hard to just say no to chips and cookies during that mid-afternoon slump. So, instead, leave a bag of almonds or kale chips next to your laptop. Its much easier than getting up to snag something from the office kitchen.2. Bring Your Own LunchWhen you make it, and the local sandwich shop doesnt, you get to control what kinds of foods you choose to eat. Yes, this takes work, but its so worth it for your health and your bank account.3. Hang Out With the Health NutsScience says you eat what your friends eat, so try surrounding yourself with people wholl unintentionally help you sto your bad habits.4. Stand Up and Stretch OftenEven if its just to tackle some emails or short to-dos, spend 30 minutes a day standing at your desk- we bet itll boost your energy. Oh, and if your office doesnt have any place where you can work standing up, then just literally make sure youre physically standing up and stretching at least once an hour. Theres also nothing worse than leaving work at the end of the day with a kink in your neck or sore muscles, so avoid the pain with these 17 exercises that you can do right at your desk5. Practice Smart Computer HabitsSta ring at a computer all day is exhausting, and hard on the eyes, neck, back, and head. So, remember to take short breaks between tasks, turn the brightness down on your computer, sit up straight, use eye drops, and shift positions occasionally.6. Schedule Walking MeetingsTake your meetings on a stroll, where you can enjoy some sunshine, stretch your muscles, and maybe get those creative juices flowing.7. Take the StairsIts a quick way to get your heart rate up when theres no time for a workout. (If you work on the 20th floor or higher like I do, maybe try taking the stairs halfway and catching an elevator when youve exhausted yourself.)Tiring idea? Yes, but science says itll make you smarter8. Work Out in the Middle of the DayIf you can, try taking an hour off work to head to a nearby yoga senderaum or go for a run. Muse Senior Editor Stacey Gawronski found that after doing so, her day flew by and she still got a lot done, despite losing an hour I felt so productive from my exercise b oost that I barely noticed what time it was.9. Try a Quick NapIt can be hard to just conk out on your desk without concerning your boss, but if youre able to- and desperately need it- let him or her know you could use a bit of shut-eye to refocus and excuse yourself to a couch or private room for a quick nap. Youll be more productive for the rest of the day. (Just dont do it every day.)10. Work OutsideBelieve it or not, your natural habitat is not a room filled with fluorescent lights and computer screens, says Muse Career Coach Lea McLeod.Grab your laptop, or an old-fashioned notebook, and get some work done (even if its just for a bit) at a park nearby, on a bench outside your office, or in an outdoor restaurant. Itll reduce your stress, and give you a healthy dose of vitamin D. (And, if youre not sure how this will work, try using these 16 items to help you shift your desk to a new space.)11. Carve Out Personal TimeYou cant work all the time, its just not good for you. As Muse Wr iter Lily Herman realized, My constant desire to work came to a head when I start showing signs of brownout- its the notion that while I was performing fine from the outside, I was slowly becoming exhausted, unmotivated, and uninspired. So, literally set aside a slot on your calendar for you time- whether that means getting yourself a coffee, scrolling through social media, or chatting with a co-worker.12. Drink Lots of WaterIt goes without saying, really. Water equals a happy body (and less mid-day headaches). My secret for success? A fun water bottle. Try out one with a straw, or a button, or a flippy lid.13. Buy a Stress-Relief ToyTake your frustrations out on something else besides your co-workers or boss- itll salvage your relationships and ease your stress. For some great ideas, check out these 18 options thatll fit right on your desk.14. Start an Office Workout TraditionHere at The Muse, were big fans of the 3 PM judgment-free push-ups- its when members of our team stop what th eyre doing to do a round of push-ups together. Besides getting in a quick workout, its a great way to obligation as co-workers. Did I inspire you? Get a group together and start your own healthy tradition It can be as simple as swapping tea for coffee in the afternoons or taking a 10-minute mid-day walk.15. Stare Out the WindowScience says that just looking at a tree can reduce stress and make you feel better overall. This is probably the easiest health tip Ive given you all day. (Unless you live in a city, then maybe try purchasing a plant?)16. Replace That Second (or Third, or Fourth) Cup of CoffeeRather than shoving more caffeine into your body, try replacing an afternoon coffee with de-caffeinated tea or sugar-free gum.17. Turn the Music DownLoud music is harsh on the eardrums, so if youre constantly blasting it through your headphones, turn the volume down a notch. And this way, youll be able to hear if your boss is calling for you.18. Give Your Hands a BreakTheyre doing the le gwork all day (unlike your legs), so give them a rest by stretching them out or taking a second to relax them in your lap. You dont want to get carpel tunnel, do you?19. BreatheCheesy, I know, but if you just take one minute (or more) of your time a day to stop, look away from your work, and just breathe, youll feel a heck of a lot better. If youre feeling really ambitious, you might even practice mindfulness or meditation. My final tip for you Everything in moderation. Healthy habits are about balancing work and pleasure, cookies and vegetables, sitting and standing. You dont have to stop having fun or enjoying a beer with co-workers, but be mindful of how much and how often you choose one thing over another possibly better option.Did I miss anything? The Thrill of Closing the Deal; Landing a Sales Job

The Thrill of Closing the Deal Landing a Sales JobThe Thrill of Closing the Deal Landing a Sales JobSales rep finds new job and has fun selling himself at networking events along the way.John Delaney wasnt happy to get laid off. But looking back, he said looking for a job was kind of fun.Except for waking up in the middle of the night and wondering what would happen to me, I enjoyed the experience, he said. If I could make a job out of being unemployed, I would do it. Its the challenge, the ability to network, sharing ideas around a common problem - a lot of these skills are the saatkorn as when you are selling products or services.Delaney, who was laid off from his job in outside sales for Salary.com in early January, wasnt completely surprised when he got his pink slip. There had been several rounds of layoffs before that, he said. They had already taken the bottom performers. There was a workforce reduction of one-third of the U.S. employees, and I was a remote employee. When bus iness started to fall off a cliff, in August 2008, I was hoping I had enough momentum to survive, but that wasnt the case. However, his previous employer did give him some vacation pay as well as two months of advance on his salary, enough of a cushion so that my legs werent totally cut off, he said. The company also set him up with a job counselor, who helped him in a number of ways. I met with her once a week. We spent a lot of time getting me out in front of people. The counseling service hosted networking events, and let me know about other networking events in my area. The counselor taught me how to interview and helped me pare down my resume. They also talked about job boards, but it was a friend who referred him to Ladders. He said he had a few friends who had had success with it, but when he first went to look at it, he was surprised that he had to pay to use it. My friend said, Try it, you can cancel it at any time, Delaney said. So, he paid his $30 and started getting leads from the site.Delaney, who lives outside Philadelphia, was looking for a sales job that would allow him to continue to work in the Philadelphia area. I have two boys going into high school, so we were not moving, he said. I swore to the family that I would work three jobs if I had to rather than move.A windfall of offersHe didnt have to consider that option. In mid-February he heard from one of the companies hed applied to, Corporation Service Co., for a sales position. The company, based in Delaware, needed an outside sales person for its mid-Atlantic region. Within two weeks, he received an offer. Two other offers came in that same day, he said. Maybe its a little easier finding a sales job than other positions right now, because companies are looking for revenue generators. But, he said, he never took for granted that a job was imminent. No matter how qualified I thought I was for a job, it could take three or four weeks to get a response, he said. I am mucksmuschenstill getting responses from companies that I applied to. I think companies have a tidal wave of applications, and they are extremely cautious right now. They arent responding as quickly as they used to. They are screening carefully. So I think its not unusual for things to take longer in this job market.Delaney said that he was very comfortable with the networking process - in part, he said, because it uses many of the same skills he uses in his work. Sales is knowing your audience and creating a need. With networking, you are the product you are selling. In a way, he said, he was honing his job skills as he looked for a job.Lending a handDelaney, who started his new job in early March, has continued to network, in part to help friends from Salary.com who were also laid off. Ive kind of made it my mission to make networking a high priority, he said. Im staying in touch with people, whether they helped me get a job or not. I tell people to go on the job-search sites and participate in forums, (w here) you can chat with other people and find out about events. You have to do it as much as possible, and you have to connect with as many people in as many ways as you can, Delaney said. Im trying to stay in touch with the people I networked with, and Im happy to lend the benefit of my experience to anyone who asks.He is also encouraging friends who are still working but unhappy in their jobs, to start their job search by networking. Ive told them to at least put their resume together, and Ill start handing it around, he said.It was so much fun the first time, hes doing it again for his friends. Hes still enjoying the challenge.Theres no one way that works in every situation, he said. You have to probe the boundaries and see what happens.

How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions

How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions Most hiring managers include  at least a few  behavioral questions  in each job interview they conduct. What can you expect when youre asked these types of questions? In a behavioral question or a behavioral job interview, the interviewer asks you about your past work experiences. For example, he or she might say, “Tell me about a time that you had to multitask at work” or “Give me an example of a conflict you had with an employee. How did you resolve it?” Employers who use this approach are seeking  concrete evidence that proves the candidate has the skills and abilities needed for the job. The idea behind a behavioral interview question is that past behavior is an indicator of future behavior. Therefore, examples from your past give the employer an idea of how you would handle a similar situation if you were to be hired. What You Could Be Asked Interviewers might pose a variety of behavioral questions. Examples of interview questions include, Can you give me an example of how you motivated an underperforming subordinate to increase productivity? and Describe a time when you implemented a new program which was successful. Employers are looking for a detailed explanation of an experience from your past. They want to know what the experience was and how you dealt with it. Your responses will give the interviewer an indication of how you handle projects and issues at work. How to Prepare Its impossible for candidates to anticipate all possible questions youll be asked prior to an interview. Many will be specific to the job for which youre being considered. However, by carefully reviewing the job listing and reviewing lists of common behavioral interview questions, you can prepare for the most likely questions. Before going into an interview, take the time to identify the qualities of the ideal candidate for that position. Look through the job listing for a list of qualifications and scan for any keywords that give you a hint as to what the employer wants in a job candidate. Then match your qualifications to the job, so youre prepared with examples related to the experience and qualifications the employer is seeking. In addition to looking for any cues within the job advertisement, if time permits, conduct  informational interviews  with professional contacts in the field to get input regarding the preferred skills, knowledge bases, and personal qualities of successful employees in that type of job. Once you get a sense of the questions you might be asked, the next step will be to come up with examples from past experiences that have helped you develop the skills and qualities needed for a job. Create a list of seven to 10 key assets that make you a strong candidate for your target job. For each asset, think of an anecdote or story of how you have used that strength to add value in some situation. You can use anecdotes from your roles as an employee, student, volunteer, or intern. How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions When practicing answers for behavioral interview questions, consider following what is called the STAR interview response technique. It is a four-step technique for answering questions about past behaviors at work: Situation.  Describe the situation or set the scene. Explain the place you were working for or the task you were given.Task.  Describe the issue or problem you were confronted with.Action.  Describe the action you took to intervene in the situation or solve the problem. This should introduce the key asset you would like to illustrate.Results.  Describe the results  your action generated. Explain how you helped solve the problem or improve the company in some way. Imagine an employer asks you the behavioral interview question, “Tell me about a time that you used your organizational skills to improve a situation at work.” A possible answer using the STAR technique would be as follows: When I took on the job as an assistant at Marketing Solutions, I soon learned that there was no easily accessible system for retrieving information on past campaigns. Each of the five consultants had their own computer files. I suggested to the director that we set up a shared online filing system with past campaign materials that would be accessed by all staff. I interviewed each of the staff to get input about how to categorize the files and proposed a system that was implemented. The system was a success; it is still in place four years later. My supervisor mentioned this accomplishment as one of the reasons for my raise at my recent performance review.

5 reasons to cook on a weeknight

5 reasons to cook on a weeknight 5 reasons to cook on a weeknight We’ve all been there: after a crazy day at work, putting out fires left and right, the LAST thing you want to do is to even think about cooking. The idea of pulling out the cutting board and a pan (and possibly putting out a literal fire) is just too much to bear. All of that coupled with the fact that many young adults don’t exactly consider themselves savvy chefs, cooking after work can seem downright intimidating. But how many of us wish we could be Ina Garten? I mean, she makes it look so easy! And since she says #StoreBoughtIsFine - here are five reasons why you should go full-blown Barefoot Contessa on a Tuesday. It’s (Potentially) HealthierLet’s be real, the age of Uber Eats makes it reaaalll easy to order food from your favorite Thai restaurant or from that amazing old-fashioned burger joint a few blocks from your apartment (guilty as charged). And while it’s definitely necessary to treat yo self Tom and Donna style, cooking at home for yourself can help you stay on track with your personal health goals, whatever they may be. Cooking for yourself also puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to what’s in your food (i.e. no hidden salt, sugar, and preservatives). It’s Budget-FriendlyIf after a long day at work your first thought is to order something or buy something “ready-made” -  resist the urge! Your wallet will thank you later. Tip: research some of your favorite takeout meals and see what it would take to create it at home - chances are that you’ll be able to make it for a fraction of the cost! It’s TherapeuticOne of the things I enjoy most about cooking for myself after work is how relaxing and centering it can be. Going through the rhythms of chopping, sauteing, and mixing help to wash away the stresses of the workday. Feel like cooking is stressful no matter what? Try this simple recipe on for size: Ina Garten’s Summer Garden Pasta. It’s FunDon’t get it twisted, going out for happy hour with the girls overrules m ost other weeknight plans - but why go out when you can host your besties at your place? Artisanal cheeses? Rosé? Fancy crackers? Maybe a lil prosciutto?! What’s not to love about that? BONUS: de-stressing with girlfriends over some vino is always a good time, am I right??Plus, if you are someone who loves to play host to your friends, this is a great chance to try out some new recipes instead of winging it on the night of a big dinner party. It’s a Creative OutletLet’s face it: even if we love our jobs, some days we leave feeling so drained. Concocting a culinary creation (yay for alliteration!) during your precious downtime can help get those creative juices flowing! Especially if you’re like me and your fridge is sometimes filled with the most random ingredients. Giving yourself creative license to have fun and make mistakes can lead to some seriously tasty eats! Now I hope you feel empowered to get in the kitchen and make some magic! This article was originally posted on TheEverygirl.com.

5 things to do when you have too many ideas and never finish

5 things to do when you have too many ideas and never finish 5 things to do when you have too many ideas and never finish What do you do when you’re overwhelmed with too many ideas? Do you abandon them, or do you finish what you start?Juggling multiple ideas and goals - to write, exercise, read more, wake up early and so on - is a tough gig that often begins with excitement, but ends with procrastination, and failure to finish any one of the ideas we started. Here are 5 different things to do when you’re overwhelmed with too many ideas and goals. Why do we fail to follow through on our ideas?“I have too many ideas for a lifetime.” â€" Taylor WilsonIn 2003, Sheena Iyengar, Psychologist and Professor at Columbia Business School, conducted an 800,000 employee strong study, to investigate the effects that adding more investment choices had on their participation in retirement saving plans. [1]At the end of the study period, the researchers gathered the data and plotted the results to answer the question:  would more employees participate in retirement saving plans, if more investment choices were made available to them?As we’d predict, the answer is yes. Afterall, more choice is better. And so, this would be the researchers conclusion.Or, was it?The researchers discovered that adding more investment choices,  reduced  the likelihood that employees would participate in retirement saving plans. As per the diagram above, for every 10 funds added to the array of options, the rate of participation drops by 2 percent. In fact, for those employees who chose to invest, adding more investment choices increased the chances that employees would invest in more conservative funds. This is the paradox of choice. More choice often leads to less action. The more ideas and goals we pursue, the less likely we’ll follow through on any one of them. And vice versa. There are other explanations for  why we fail to finish what we start.  Lack of time, fear of failure, overwhelm from multiple choices that drain energy and a decline of excitement after starting a new project, can lead to chronic procrastination. When  we get stuck in motion at rest, instead of motion in action, our time and energy are wasted on efforts that produce little results. Here are five different ways to avoid overwhelm, get started and follow through on your ideas.5 ways to overcome too many ideas syndrome1. Create mini-deadlines.The more time it takes to complete a task, the greater the likelihood that we fall victim to ‘Parkinson’s Law,’ which states that, work expands to fill the time available for its completion. For example, if yo u have one week to complete a three-hour task, according to Parkinson’s law, the task will increase in complexity and keep dragging on for the duration of the week. The best way to combat this problem, is to  create mini-deadlines  that force you to finish tasks within a short time frame.Action:  Create a list of your daily tasks and note approximately, how much time it takes to complete each one of them. Then, cut the time limit of each task in half. Aim to finish each task by these deadlines.2. Use the 80/20 rule.In layman’s terms, the 80/20 rule suggests that twenty percent of the what you do contributes to eighty percent of the results you get. In other words, each task can be broken down into activities that either fall into the twenty or eighty percent group. For example, if your goal is to exercise more and lose weight, there are some exercises - the twenty percent, like high intensity sprints - that will significantly contribute to weight loss, more so than others - th e eighty percent, like stretching. The key is to experiment, discover and focus your time and energy on the twenty percent activities, that yield the greatest returns. This way, you can get more done by doing less - and in less time.3. Trust your gut.Often, we hesitate to get started and take action on ideas, because of the fear of failure, rejection and self-doubt. Countless hours are spent researching and planning to take action, but when it comes time to jump ship, we stay on the boat and fail to follow through on our plans. In the book  Blink:  The Power of Thinking Without Thinking  (audiobook),  world-renowned journalist and author, Malcolm Gladwell, makes a strong case that, often, snap judgements made within seconds, lead to better decisions than a more cautious, thoroughly planned approach.Next time you’re not sure of what to do next or how to do it, trust your gut instinct and take action on the first thought that crosses your mind, because more times than not, you’ll p robably be on the right track.4. Develop the habit of finishing. Many people have mastered the art of  starting,  but few have built the habit of  finishing.  Starting is easier than finishing, but the bulk of the results we seek, lie at the finish line. The process of building the habit of  finishing,  is just like any other habit. First, you  start small  and build up, with a reasonable expectation of  how long it will take to form a habit. Then, you can make  small changes to your environment  to make it easier to finish whatever you set out to do.5. Practice Quitting.Contrary to popular opinion, the most productive, successful people, quit on their goals all the time - they just know what to quit and when to do so.The upside of quitting  is that you redirect time and energy wasted on an unfruitful idea or goal, towards another more rewarding venture. Here’s a quick inventory check. If the costs of pursuing an idea has outweighed the benefits - over a period of time - perhaps it ’s time to consider cutting your losses. Although it may hurt at first, down the line, you’ll free up more time to focus on better ideas.Finish what you startWhilst it can be exciting to start new ideas and goals, if we don’t finish what we start, valuable time and energy - that can’t be recovered - will go to waste.Falling in love with  starting  is easy. Falling in love with  finishing  is hard. But, if you can learn to fall in love with the art of  finishing  - and the process of overcoming adversity, failures and working around obstacles - you’ll consistently follow through on your ideas.Mayo Oshin writes at  MayoOshin.com, where he shares practical self-improvement ideas and proven science for better health, productivity and creativity.  To get practical ideas on how to stop procrastinating and build healthy habits, you can join his free weekly newsletter  here.A version of this  article  originally appeared at  mayooshin.com  as “5 Things to Do When You Have To o Many Ideas and Never Finish Anything.”Footnotes Iyengar, Sheena S., Wei Jiang, and Gur Huberman. 2003.  Ã¢€œHow Much Choice Is Too Much? Determinants of Individual Contributions in 401(k) Retirement Plans.” In the book,  The Paradox of Choice,  Barry Schwartz makes a strong case that more choice, could rob us off our emotional well-being and happiness. And eliminating choices can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

How to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work - The Muse

How to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work - The Muse How to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work Even though you love your day job, you’ve got some big ideas for a new passion project. Or maybe you’re saving for a big trip and looking for cash flow outside of your career. Or perhaps you’re trying to monetize a hobby you love. Whatever the case, side gigs- no matter what form they take- are becoming a smart move both financially and career-wise. And the smartest people know there are a few questions you should ask before diving in if you’re currently employed full-time. 1. Are Side Hustles Even Allowed at My Company? In an economy where 39% of working Millennials have started their own gig on the side, smart employers understand that bans on outside projects can stifle creativity, push employees underground, and create a culture of distrust. They also know they stand to lose out on really exceptional and industrious people. After all, it takes some serious drive to add more work to your plate when you could spend your evenings lounging around instead. But before moving ahead, you need to scan through the fine print on your contract and the company handbook to make sure you’re in the clear legally. Read carefully to make sure there isn’t a potential conflict of interest (more on this below!) or specific policies such as a non-compete clause. Look specifically for sections that discuss how long the non-compete applies, what type of work you are prohibited from doing, and whether or not the non-compete is only regional. If you don’t, you could be setting yourself up to get fired or worse, sued. Unless your side hustle is in the exact same line of work as your day job, it probably won’t be an issue- but better to be safe than sorry. 2. How Do I Know if There’s a Conflict of Interest? The simple, no-mess way to avoid any potential conflicts of interest is to set up a meeting with human resources or your corporate legal rep. There’s no need to go into specifics about the clients, the size of your projects, or what they are paying you. But a quick rundown of the basic information will help you avoid some of the major pitfalls, such as poaching your company’s clients, unintentionally stealing intellectual property, or using their resources on your side gig (yes, including that work-issued laptop that you bring home to watch Netflix on). 3. Do I Have to Tell My Boss? My Company? HR? If what you plan to do is allowed by your company, then there’s no reason why you necessarily need to disclose your side hustle. But although it isn’t legally necessary to tell folks, it’s more than likely- with social media- that one of your co-workers will find out. If your office is one where a Facebook discovery could lead to an awkward conversation with your boss, save yourself in advance by just giving them a heads-up that you’re working on something outside the office. Use this opportunity to explain how the skills you stand to gain from your side hustle will benefit your employer, your project team, or the company down the road. Pitching your side project this way will temper your supervisor’s fears that you’ve become disenchanted with your job and make him or her focus on the value of your entrepreneurial spirit. Who knows, they might even have some helpful advice or potential connections. This will not only ease any anxiety you might be feeling about doing something sneaky, but will also prevent your supervisor from feeling that you were dishonest or shady with them. The last thing you want is them blaming a recent mistake on the fact you’re not focused. 4. How Can I Make it Clear to My Manager That I’m Still 100% Into My Current Job? Depending on who you’re talking with, the term “side hustle” can come off as a dirty word. While rare nowadays, there are still those who think an employee won’t be able to give his or her best effort at a nine-to-five job while also focusing on a part-time business venture. That by having a side project, you are in some ways cheating on your employer. The best way to put your boss at ease is to have that initial “Here’s what I’m working on conversation” and assure them of your commitment. Then, set strict boundaries for yourself and stick to them. Keep in mind that after this discussion, your performance at work might be viewed under a microscope, so you need to be sure you’re on time for meetings, hitting your deadlines, and just generally firing on all cylinders. And know this: No supervisor, no matter how open he or she is to your project- will be pleased if they catch you working on your own business on their dime, especially if you’re not hitting all your goals at work. It can be exhausting to put in a full day and then turn around to work on your side hustle all night. But because it can be such a rewarding way to gain valuable skills, supplement your income, or make you feel great, you should try to make it happen. Because if you do all of the above- checking to make sure you’re not doing anything unethical or illegal and talking to your boss- there’s nothing really stopping you.

How to Improve Your Resume in 60 Seconds [Infographic]

How to Improve Your Resume in 60 Seconds [Infographic] How to Improve Your Resume in 60 Seconds Improve Your Resume in 60 SecondsEvery person who has ever looked for a job knows the importance of resumes in the process of finding a job. And they also know the struggle - it̢۪s never easy to create the perfect resume. The job hunting has become even more challenging nowadays when technology is a big part of the recruiting procedure. Artificial Intelligence, electronic scanning systems, modern recruiters with less time to read each application- all these factors have significantly changed the world of recruiting.1.Mobile Devices Are in the GameEven though most recruiters are still using desktop computers at work, you should always consider your application being read on a mobile device. If your typography is too small when seen on a tablet, for example, you automatically lose points. An important part of your resume is to show that you are looking at the future rather than the past - because after all, you want to learn and grow. Showcasing that you are aware of the mobile-first so ciety can only enhance your application.2.Social Media is Half of Your ResumeSource: giphy.comThese days, our lives are exposed to a very great extent. This is why, having a decent social media presence that displays you like the person and professional you would like recruiters to see, is essential.Your interests and preferences - the movies you like to watch and books you like to read, your favorite sports team - everything can be found on your social media profile. This is why you have to ensure your social accounts make you look competent, and they correspond the statements in your resume. Because honesty will always be appreciated.3.Show, Don̢۪t TellEasier said than easily done, right? Sometimes you might find it hard to showcase your project or skills visually in your resume. Managing to do it will pay back.A more convenient way to do it is by using an online resume builder which allows you to create an appealing resume with no design skills needed.4.Shorter Time to Review You r ApplicationThe digital age has also influenced the attention span of every person including recruiters. This doesn̢۪t mean that they will not review your application for consideration, but it helps if your resume is short and to-the-point.Including specific resume keywords that you̢۪ve carefully picked out from the job posting and even more carefully incorporated in your application.

Every Job Seeker for Him or Herself

Every Job Seeker for Him or Herself Every Job Seeker for Him or Herself As clearly stated in the subtitle, the premise of the article is that job seekers need to understand that recruiters do not work for them. But I’m here to tell you, job seekers, no one works for you. Not the CEO, not the people in HR who are supposed to be there for you, not your boss who seems to like you and not your co-worker who chats it up with you on your lunch break. The recruiter doesn’t work for you nor does the hiring manager. In the job seeking (and ultimate business) world, it’s every job seeker for him and herself. Sounds harsh, but it’s true. Need some proof? The writer of the article listed five tips for job seekers to remember when working with recruiters, yet I can easily show you how each tip rings true for anyone in the job seeking and employed worlds. Shall we dive in? AOL says: Recruiters dont work for you. Keep in mind: the company with the job opening is paying the recruiters salary, so he or she is beholden to that organization and does not work for you. Job seekers who think the recruiter works for them will be disappointed when the recruiter who seemed very interested and solicitous becomes distant and doesnt have time to call back. Recruiter.com says: No one works for you. It’s understandable how job seekers would assume a person whose role seems to be to get them a job isn’t actually working for them, but for the paying company. But just the same, hiring managers and HR seek to discover top talent, yet they still don’t work for job seekers. Like recruiters, managers aren’t obligated to do anything for an applicant, unfortunately even if they contact the person after receiving his/her resume. People do work to benefit whoever is paying them, and 9 times out of 10, that’s not a job seeker. AOL says: Do not tell your recruiter you dont know how long you want to keep working. If youre thinking of dropping out of the workforce to stay home with your children, care for an aging parent or start your own business, your recruiter may stop returning your calls. Recruiter.com says: Keep your career plans to yourself. While AOL’s career advice is right on, job seekers shouldn’t disclose too much of their career plans to anyone when it comes to applying for a job. A hiring manager works for a company just like a recruiter. Even when you land a role, be cautious. Just because your manager seems easy to talk to or your co-worker seems trustworthy doesn’t mean he or she will understand or support your future plans. Knowing a worker isn’t invested in a company for the long run can send red flags to the business. AOL says: Never spill your guts to a recruiter. Unlike a best friend, coach or therapist, a recruiter is not interested in your problems or concerns. Recruiter.com says: Save in-depth, personal convos for outside the workplace. Recruiters, HR, managers and even colleagues aren’t too interested in your personal life. Keep a strict line between your professional and personal lives, remembering like Vegas, what happens outside of work should stay outside of work. AOL says: Be honest. While you dont want to spill your guts to a recruiter, it is not advisable to lie, either. Unlike a best friend, who does not count on your professionalism to pay her mortgage, and may forgive a fib once in a while, your recruiter relies on candidates who represent themselves accurately. Recruiter.com says: Use wisdom. Let’s be real. Do you think when hiring managers at McDonald’s ask an applicant, “So, what made you apply for this position?” they really believe his/her response of “Well, I’ve always admired how McDonald’s treats its workers and wanted to join the team”? We can all be honest and agree that the answer is no. Use wisdom when talking to everyone- whether the recruiter or your manager. If your goal isn’t to work at the company for the next 10 years, don’t say it is. Focus on your desire to work for the company now and how it will benefit your current career goals, which (throw this in) perfectly align with the company’s mission. Find creative ways to explain your plans without directly saying, “Hey, I just need some cash right now.” Bottom line is recruiters and HR managers aren’t dumb- most people would ditch their jobs if they weren’t receiving a paycheck every two weeks. AOL says: Recruiters expect you to be loyal. Loyalty to a best friend doesnt mean you cant be friends with other people, but a job seeker can land in really hot water if two recruiters submit his qualifications for the same job. Recruiter.com: Your loyalty, as a job seeker, lies with you. Like the premise of AOL’s article explains, recruiters don’t work for you. And I remind job seekers that no one does. Job seekers are in it for themselves and need to do what is best for them. Apply to as many companies as you can and go on multiple interviews. Keep your options open. You aren’t tied down to any one company until you have accepted a job offer and completed the new hire paperwork.
